It Started with A Question..

“What do you have in an unset Peridot?”

This request came from a husband who had been enthusiastically helping his wife pick out two of my favorite pieces on the sales floor of my studio in Carmel for their anniversary.  In the course of that exchange he explained that Peridot was his birth stone and that he had never seen a Peridot stone that he really liked.  I’m sure that I became quite animated in my answer, explaining that Peridot was also my birthstone and that I had had similar experiences.  Well, he was soon to find out that I have always made it a point over the years to stock only the best in loose-gem Peridot and finished jewelry in Peridot.  The trillion you see here is the one Peridot that finally spoke to him after all the years of looking.  His wife insisted that he have the stone.

The couple returned home with a promise that we would make his dream ring someday.  Well, many, many months went by while caught in the turmoil of life and Covid that had consumed all of us.  But one day I got the call.  “It’s time for his ring to be on his finger”.  I sent a number of photo ideas for them to think about and set up an appointment at my Monterey office to talk face to face with them.  After a wonderful session of exchanging ideas, we set our sights on a ring like that pictured at the end of this row.

We had decided that I would get started on a wax model.  The ring was to be made “long distance” with their next visit to Monterey being to pick up the completed ring.  These are the actual photos that we exchanged in that process.  The overall ring design was a winner.  The first two photos are of a design idea that we talked about for setting the stone a little differently.  I also showed them a full-bezel design option.  When we compared the two, we all agreed that the full bezel was the way to go.

These four photos are good but still don’t catch the true simplicity and beauty of the ring.  He was delighted with the ring and his choice of a trillion-shaped Peridot.  It all started with the gift of some fantastic examples of my work and ended with he and his wife creating this ring. With creating a ring for him we had been taken full circle, and the cycle was complete.  We had planned to meet for a quick lunch on the pier in Monterey when they came to pick up the ring.  It was a beautiful day, and their great company and the fun presentation of the ring were all true rewards after the trials of the past few years.
